people in art spaces
I was at India’s Art Summit last week. It is one of India’s most well-knowned and well-heeled art shows, with galleries exhibiting and selling their works.
A little more on the art later. But what still lingers from that Delhi show despite being in SIngapore at the moment is the people I observed at the Art Summit. There is something about people in art spaces that intrigues me.

peoplesketching:
i see him regularly enough. he sells cameras. he is often talkative. today, he was talkative too. but he was also annoyed glazed with a thin caramelised cynicism.
he dressed well today. i was impressed by both the intention and the final execution. the effort was praise-worthy. i wanted a photo…
india-inspired mechanisation
Sometimes you need to leave it to realise what it’s done for you. Perhaps its a little bit like leaving your parents’ house.
I left India after 3 months. Back here in Singapore, only when observing my India stint from 6 hours away, do I see how living in Delhi has made marks in my life.
Bullock carts, power failures, man-powered rickshaws, sweeping brooms instead of vacuum...

spore-boy:
Ever since going to the place called university, one either realise how much more the world makes sense, or how much more ridiculous the world actually is. Having studied Economics, it should have been the former for me.
But somehow, dedicating 3 years of my life studying the intellects and the…
Jamiroquai-inspired
“…it’s getting harder and harder to breathe” is the Jamiroquai-inspired line from one of his songs that is on play-back in my head.
Last couple of weeks have been like being stuck on a high-speed run-away metro train. Its been moving so fast I haven’t had time to check back on my map. Perhaps back to Singapore for Chinese New Year will give me some of that breathing...

trying something new.
it has been 4 days in bombay. our india team of 15 brainstormed and charted our workplans for 2011. it was as intense as it was invigorating.
its going to be exciting months ahead. its going to be an intense and exciting week ahead as well. got some new projects and initiatives to look forward to.
absolutely shattered on the plane ride back to delhi. its back to work, gazillion emails, and...
the bombay pagal.
i am in bombay.
perhaps its 3 days of workplan meetings. perhaps its contemplating my work-year ahead. perhaps its bomlhi back to haunt. perhaps jamesnord-spiration.
its way past bedtime. get up in 4,5 hours. i’m the bombay pagal. and these are my works of midnight insanity.

5,30pm
5,30pm. I’ve been home the whole day, spending time with my photos.
I needed to go out to run an errand. 5,30pm. Its starting to get dark. Not bothering with my hair, I throw on my coat and head out. It’s not as cold as I had expected.
I hit the dust-blanketed road. Street is busy. I break into a run. People stare. I still run. My legs seem foreign to this activity. Of running. In...
evening in art space.
It took me twists and turns through dark alleys to get there, but I did. The Spanish cultural institute in Delhi was holding a photography exhibition in the evening.
I couldn’t tell you the name of the exhibition, nor the photographer. I knew he took amazing photos of Cuba with a Nikon FM90. But I knew there was art in the room, which was in the basement.
There was wine, food nibbles,...

"this is india, not singapore"
I bought a Tamrac camera bag from what was Asia’s 3rd largest photography exhibition held in Delhi. I visited the exhibition last Friday.
So I spotted the Tamrac Evolution 8, an amazing camera bag. The enthusiastic salesman, I think his name was Vincent, was assuring and confident of his product. Even without Vincent, the product spoke for itself. So I decided to buy.
However, they...
a forgotten winter post
I leave the house earlier than usual.
The street is nearly empty. No honks. Winter has properly set in, and you that because when you breathe out you get ‘misty’ winter breathe.
You almost forget this is a dangerous city.
Being now used to it, I take my usual route to the metro station and walk by the dust heaps, rubbish strewn, urine stench, and think its a very decent morning....
romantic winters
Numb feet,
Brittle fingers.
Iced cheeks,
Urine-streaked walls.
Chill-outlined face,
Wrapped-up dolls.
Cold air sinks,
Pollution gets trapped.
Delhi winter,
Nothingly romantic.

REBLOG: On Calling Yourself A "Photographer" →
A photographer. Is a photographer in today’s definition anyone who owns & shoots with a DSLR or a lomo-like camera? Is one who shoots with film more a photographer than one who uses its digital cousin?
Or is a photographer one who pursues, and seeks to master, the craft of photography?
I’ve been asking myself this same question: am I a photographer? Somehow I don’t feel...
streetdelhi
in a land with 330,004 gods, even gods jostle for space; streetwall-mounted god.
in a country this big, there are many nations. with a history this long, there have been wars fought. in a nation this young, there’s still much worth fighting for.
bomlhi: a moment-in-the-making (Part I)
One
Bomlhi was an idea conceived in Bandra West, an area in Bombay, in a cosy cottage-turned-design-studio. It was conceived by accident, not by a methodical process, and therefore its definition is post-birth and continually a work-in-progress.
There must have been so many influences in its conception, that if you are looking for a straight-cut definition, you’ll be disappointed, at least at...
bomlhi: a moment-in-the-making
watch this space. bomlhi is coming out.
A moment is a medieval unit of time equal to 1.5 minutes or 1/40 of an hour [1]. In modern English it usually refers to “a short period of time” but doesn’t specifically say how short.
Moment form is defined as “a mosaic of moments”, and, in turn, a moment is defined as a “self-contained (quasi-)independent section, set...
serendipity india: 2 New Years in a row
Last new year as we ushered in 2010, I found myself in Goa, India. On a whim, I decided that my year-end holiday would be in India, the world’s next elephantine economy, a nation that might come to define the coming century. I landed in Bombay, and made our way to Goa for the New Year. Valerie was my partner-in-crime.
A year later, I find myself ushering in 2011 in India once more, this...
